Who are those smiling faces?

KATIE

About me:
I'm Katie and I'm 24. I've been a pole student at Twisted Bodies for about seven months and I work the front desk in the mornings and do whatever else might be needed around the studio! I love all styles of dance, baking, tattoos, the Denton Square, and most of all Twisted Bodies. You can usually find me drinking too much coffee at the front desk in the morning or and I always have extra dry hands if you need some in class!

What was your first experience at Twisted Bodies?
A level one pole class with Katie Deering. I originally came to Twisted Bodies with my heart set on becoming an Aerial Silks master, but I fell in love with pole and have stuck with it ever since!

Have you always been involved in dance and fitness?
I've always been involved in classical dance classes, but I really became interesting in the fitness aspect of it when I decided to become a Zumba instructor.

When and how did you decide you wanted to work at Twisted Bodies and for the two crazy women who own it?
I had been a member for months and during a spin pole class one Wednesday I finally got to meet both Khristen and Carissa. Getting to meet them in a class-environment really shaped the way I saw  them; they were fun, approachable and perfectly well, twisted!

I'd worked at a small family-owned gym before, so as soon as I found out the studio was looking for front desk staff jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the team.

What are your biggest goals as Front Desk staff and student?
My goals for the front desk are getting bookings for both The Twisted Twosome's workshops, and performance opportunities for the Hypella crew, and doing whatever is needed to help Twisted Bodies grow! As a pole student my goals are competing and eventually teaching!

What are your biggest challenges?
Time management! Sometimes I over-book myself without even realizing it. Starting pole dance and knowing I have to have the energy to go to class has helped a lot with that though!

Favorite Indulgence:
J&J's pizza (where I also work on the weekends)!

Favorite Movie:
Star Wars Return of The Jedi

Favorite Twisted Class:
Spin pole!!

Hidden Talent:
Baking! I even have a tattoo of a whisk and spoon to commentate my love for it.

What she does when life gets stressful?
Put on some music and improv dance.

Dream Vacation:
Russia and Eastern Europe, I'm a huge history nerd and would love to visit all the museums and historical sites there!

Historical figure she most identifies with:
Maud Stevens Wagner. She was a circus performer and contortionist/aerialist in the early 1900's. She was also the first known female tattoo artist in the US. She's my favorite!

If there were a soundtrack to her life:
It would be a strange mix of Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks and everything ever created by Tom Waits.

Beauty product she can't live without:
Falsies. I wear them almost every day.

Twisted Client she is most inspired by and why
Alicia Claytor, she's so stunning on every apparatus, and she's so strong! Having had her in my classes since I started has honestly made me a better student and dancer.

CATLYN

My name is Catlyn Carr I'm a Denton local and I've been working the Twisted front desk for about 2 months now. I was homeschooled from 3rd grade through high school but I've been dancing since I was 8, under the direction of Lisa Racina- Torre. I danced with Denton City Contemporary Ballet for 6 years as well as Dallas Neo-Classical Ballet for 2 seasons. I have now been dancing with Cholorock Dance Collective since 2015 under the direction of Jose Zamora and Jasmine (Jaramillo) Morris. I've also been their visual artist for the past season. Through these companies I've been lucky enough to perform in such places as The Majestic Theater in Dallas, The Dogana Theater In Innsbruck, Austria with the Young Tanzsommer tour, as well as several over cities in Austria, and attend the Houston Ballet summer intensive in 2010. I'm exited to continue my journey with Twisted as a staff member and as a student!

What was your first experience at Twisted Bodies?
My first experience at Twisted Bodies was at the old location in like 2015. I took my very first barre class (still haven't taken another...) I instantly fell in love with the atmosphere and the instructors.

Have you always been involved in dance and fitness?
Yes! I have been dancing since I was 8 years old. I quickly found my love for ballet and planned on going pro after high school.

When and how did you decide you wanted to work at Twisted Bodies and for the two crazy women who own it?
After being a student here for a year now I knew that this place was special and I wanted to work here any way I could. And as for the crazies that own it, I honestly wouldn't want them any other way.

What are your biggest goals as Front Desk staff and student?
My goals are to get my Yoga/ Pilates certifications. I would really love to eventually get my Aerial certification as well. As a student I would love to perfect my skills enough to join Hypella Dance Company.

What are your biggest challenges?
I think my biggest challenge is being a perfectionist. I'm really hard on myself, especially in my dancing and silks. I just need to remember to chill out and have fun!

Favorite Indulgence:
Sour Patch Kids are my weakness

Favorite Movie:
Ferris buellers day off is my all time fave movie!

Favorite Twisted Class:
Reformer with Carissa is my all time fave.

Hidden Talent:
It isn't really a secret but I do art/painting stuff. If I didn't seriously pursue dancing I would have tried to pursue art.

What she does when life gets stressful?
When life gets stressful I try to spend as much time with my dog as possible!!

Dream Vacation:
Dream vacay would be to go to New Zealand!

Historical figure she most identifies with:
I really admire Frida Kahlo. Her painting explored Identity, race, gender. (ect.) Her paintings also has an almost autobiographical element to them that I really aspire to have not only my art but my dancing.

If there were a soundtrack to her life:
It would probably just be Amy Winehouse Back to Black album on repeat for the rest of my life.

Beauty product she can't live without:
I'm not really one for make-up and such so I hope sunglasses count!!

Twisted Client she is most inspired by and why:
Probably Cody Johns. She has such and infectious positive attitude and I love taking classes with her. We started our silks journey around the same time and I have loved seeing her improve in not only silks but in pole as well.

VICTORIA

What was your first experience at Twisted Bodies?
I joined TB in June 2014 after doing Crossfit for many years. I met the Twisted Twosome and KNEW I needed to be here.

Have you always been involved in dance and fitness?

Honestly, no. I took one year of dance in fifth grade and hated the teacher so much; I never stepped foot into another studio until TB.

I’ve always been competitive and enjoy challenging myself, so I fell in love with TB- the supportive atmosphere allows me to push myself, but ensures body awareness to prevent injury.

When and how did you decide you wanted to work at Twisted Bodies and for the two crazy women who own it?
I love being part of a team and I knew I wanted to work with these two crazy, supportive women. I also wanted to get to know my fellow students. I enjoy getting to know the instructors as well. Everyone is positive and that attitude is contagious.

What are your biggest goals as Front Desk staff and student?
My goal for working the front desk is to get to know the students and instructors better. As a student, I hope to continue to learn new skills while improving my strength and flexibility.

What are your biggest challenges?
Getting out of my head and just doing what my body wants to do… How it truly wants to move.

Favorite Indulgence:
Food? Cashew milk ice cream… Salted Caramel.

Favorite Movie:
I have several, Hook, Fight Club, Death to Smoochy.

Favorite Twisted Class:
When Carissa teaches Barre. It is the ultimate amount of twisted you can get.

Hidden Talent:
I can’t think of one.  Being a smart ass? But I don’t hide that.

What she does when life gets stressful?
Cuss… but I do that when I’m happy too.

Dream Vacation:
Maui in the winter is my favorite place on earth. Watching whales is my happy place.

Historical figure she most identifies with:
Can’t think of one.

If there were a soundtrack to her life:
Anything they played in dark, dank places in the ‘80’s. “Dark Wave” music speaks to me.

Twisted Client she is most inspired by and why:
I have several for different reasons. Lisa Whipple, Shannon Kniss, Wendy Chance, Teresa Starrett, Karen Fortune, Beth Wright.
